How to change Power level on the Yaesu FT-891
You bet — the Yaesu FT-891 hides its power settings a little deeper in the menus than some of us would like. Here’s the casual, field-savvy rundown:
Menu Items Related to Power Output
If you want to dig into menu settings:
| Menu # | Name | What It Does |
|---|---|---|
| 16–01 RF POWER | Main TX power level | Sets power in most modes (SSB/CW/FMN) |
| 16–02 AM PWR | AM carrier power | Limits AM to prevent splatter |
| 16–03 FM PWR | FM TX power | Useful for keeping heat down on long QSOs |
| 04–05 CW AUTO POWER | Auto power reduction for CW | Helps avoid PA stress |
| 11–05 HF 60M POWER | Fixed 60m power level | U.S. limits apply (not relevant in Canada) |
✅ To access these:
- Hold [F(M-LIST)] for 1 second → Menu
- Use SEL dial to scroll, MULTI to adjust

Urban Activation Quicky with the Yaesu FT-891 and Chelegance MC-750 Vertical
My wife shopped while I did a quick radio event The antenna is up in a few minutes and the radio a few minutes so in an hour I do have a chance to test things out I love how I can walk over to the antenna and shorten the whip to the 10m mark and have low SWR and then go back up to the 20m mark The untuned radials do the job and honestly if you make enough contacts you get it that one over the other is fun to try out but at the end of the day one will use what works what works every time without fail!

SK Ed Hare W1RFI – ARRL Technical Manager
I met Ed back in 2019 when I visited the ARRL HQ and had a great chat (he couldn’t leave for lunch as he had a lab test going on) and he did let me hold the Tuna Tin QRP Radio for a minute.
73s my friend and thanks for all the stuff I learned from your articles and ARRL books

Every QRPer had a TT2 in those days
